Pancakes in Thailand – what the heck?!

Snacking is Thailand’s favourite if not the most important national pastime as anyone who has been there will know.  An overwhelming variety of savoury, sweet and delicious foods are within arm’s length on every sidewalk and car park, not just on every street corner!

Thais, the great culinary innovators of Asia have taken on the challenge and actually managed to improve on the pancake, that old Western favourite. Over the past few years in fact a variety of different pancake styles have taken off and are now seen as a popular street food, sold by vendors as snacks to eat at small roadside tables, and also shared in the Bangkok offices throughout the workaday. Next time you go to Thailand notice office workers returning from lunch and checkout how every one will be carrying a couple of plastic bags with bamboo sticks poking out to share and snack on during the long afternoon. Not eaten as a breakfast food coconut pancakes are also sold at night markets throughout Thailand and are taken home from the market by parents as a wonderful dessert for their children.

Yim Yam’s Thai Coconut Pancakes have been super popular at our new Collingwood restaurant. They’re salty and sweet, moreish, creamy and quite extraordinary. Our pancakes are prepared with luscious shredded coconut meat and coconut milk. And what about the Pork Floss in the middle of your pancakes? Known in Thai as Moo Yong or teased pork this is an amazingly special accoutrement which is made from oven dried pork and rubbed into fibers. Moo Yong has a unique flavour and texture – very savoury meaty and salty in taste, similar in a small way to barbecue flavour chips, but without artificial additives.

For a trip straight to coconut heaven try this new treat at Yim Yam Collingwood today!
